Bern Kells, also known as Big Kells, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside The Covenant Man) of The Wind Through the Keyhole, the eighth and final installment in The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
Biography
Kells was born in Tree Village. As a child, he was friends with Jack, Ross, and Nell, and while both Jack and Kells were in love with Nell, she chose Jack. Kells married another woman, and it is likely he abused her, though it is unconfirmed. He was an alcoholic who would grow violent when drunk, and his wife died due to unknown causes. He and Jack Ross were woodsman whose job it was to cut ironwood trees, and eventually, Jack convinced him to stop drinking.
In the Story
One day in the forest, Kells murdered Jack, telling everyone in Tree Village that Jack was killed by a dragon. He asked Nell to marry him, and told her that it was the only way they would be able to afford to pay their taxes. After they were married, Kells started drinking again, started to beat Nell, and treated Nell's son, Tim, badly.
One day, the Covenant Man came to collect taxes. He gave Tim a key, and manipulated him into opening Kells' trunk. Tim found Jack's coin in Kell's trunk, as the Covenant Man told Tim how Kells murdered his father. He then showed Tim in a magic bucket how Kells found out that his trunk was opened, and how he thought Nell had done it. Later, Tim witnessed Kells beating Nell so badly that she became blind.
Kells later went into hiding while the people of Tree Village searched for him. Tim later went into the forest to find Maerlyn to get a cure for Nell's blindness. After the Starkblast, Tim returned home and gave his mother the cure, along with Jack's axe. Kells returned to the house and killed the Widow Smack, because he was jealous that she had a fire during the Starkblast. He then saw Tim and tried to strangle him, but Nell killed him with an axe.
