Sleipnir

Sleipnir (meaning "slippy" or "the slipper") is the grey, eight-legged horse of the god Odin. Sleipnir is the child of Loki and Svaðilfari.

Biography

Sleipnir is described as the best of all horses. He has runes carved into his teeth. Odin rides Sleipnir on his frequent journeys throughout the Nine Worlds. For example, Odin rides Sleipnir into Niflheimr to question a völva about the nature of his son's baleful dreams. Sleipnir is also said to be one of the horses the Æsir ride each day to their tribunal at the Well of Urd, or the Well of Fates. Odin lends the horse to Hermod so he can travel to Hel and ask for Baldr's return after he is killed by Loki's trickery.
