You bent the bow of God's wrath. I am God's arrow.

–Jarl Kåre to Freydis Eriksdotter

Jarl Kåre (meaning: "curly haired"; pronunciation: KAH-reh)[1] is a threat to the old pagan ways. He leads a group of Berserkers.

Biography

Early Life

Kåre is defined by the death of his brother as a child. His parents offered his brother as a human sacrifice at the Temple at Uppsala. This traumatic event seeded his life-long hatred of paganism. Kåre has spent his life roaming Scandinavia promoting Christianity through murder. Touched by madness, chosen by God, or both, Kåre is a dangerous man hellbent on cleansing Norway of paganism.

Season 1

Kåre joins forces with Olaf Haraldsson in an alliance to cleanse all of Norway of "heathens" and establish the country under Christianity.

Kåre is defeated by Freydis who stabs him and then beheads him.

Personality

Kåre is a zealot, a fundamentalist, and a crazy man. He is defined by the trauma he experienced as a child. He is known as the "murderer of innocents." He believes he is doing God's work by murdering pagans and destroying their holy shrines. He believes God has ordered him to kill Freydis. Kåre is considered deranged, even by other Vikings. Other Christians consider him crazy. While his hatred of pagans originates from his horror at the pagan's practice of human sacrifice, his massacres are clearly much more destructive and traumatic.
