Lord Cuthred was an adviser to Aethelwulf during the war against the Heathen Army. After the passing of King Aethelwulf, Queen Judith implored him to nominate Alfred as the successor to be King of Wessex. Cuthred chose rather to rally the nobles behind Aethelred, unaware he declined the throne and endorsed his half brother. He was thus named bishop of Sherborne, a very important and coveted title that was left vacant following the capture of Bishop Heahmund at the second battle of Yorktown, the Saxons presuming him dead. Cuthred was ultimately murdered by Heahmund in Sherborne cathedral, the latter accusing him of having stolen his bishopric.
