The Introduction, or Intro, serves as a tutorial of the game teaching the player about the most basic mechanics. It also gives general exposition about who you are playing as and what the objective of the character is.
Intro Screen
If the player starts the game for the very first time or chooses to watch the full intro upon selecting level 0-1, a bootup sequence starts. The player has the option to recalibrate (upon the first time, it is mandatory) audio settings, graphics settings, and the difficulty of the game. After recalibration, the game informs the player on the status of V1, an overall situation, and an objective. On a first playthrough, the screen is unskippable, but subsequent playthroughs can skip the intro screen by pressing ESC.
Minor Areas
The player starts up in a small room. The way forward is blocked by a sign and a few planks.
After that, there are two mostly closed doors the player needs to slide under. The next room has a broken walkway with an electric wall, teaching dashing to the player.
The following room has three Filths hanging upside down from the wall. This serves as a brief tutorial of Blood mechanics.
The next rooms teach the player about wall jumping and ground slams. At the end, there is a blue Soul Orb in plain sight, informing the player about the secrets.
The intro ends with an elevator shaft, starting the game proper. Unlike normal levels, the player is not ranked.
Trivia
- The Soul Orb in the Intro always stays blue, no matter whether the player has collected it or not. It also does not add to the player's orb count, nor does it award P.
- The message telling the player that close-range damage is the only way to regain health is deliberately false. The wording is only used to make sure the player knows that healing through blood is an essential mechanic.
- There is no timer in this level, nor can the ranking HUD be used.
- Using no-clip will reveal a random unopenable door in the void that is best seen with fullbright.
- The message "MANKIND IS DEAD, BLOOD IS FUEL, HELL IS FULL" being red and staying for a bit longer was originally an accident but was kept in.
- Originally, a fourth sentence "MACHINE RULES KING" was considered.
