Kokakucho

"The tragedy will reappear, just like before..."

―Kokakucho to Mayomi Shinjo in her dream, "Bird of the Phantom Dream"

Kokakucho (姑獲鳥コカクチョウ, Kokakuchō) is a monster from Ultraman Dyna.

Subtitle: Misfortune Monster (凶獣, Kyō-jū)

History

Ultraman Dyna

Kokakucho was a sentient cloud of plasma that took on the form of its spiritual namesake, first appearing in Mayumi Shinjoh's dream, where it reminded her of her boyfriend's death at the hands of Gazort. The monster then manifested in the heart of mainland China, advancing toward Tokyo while destroying power plants along the way. When Kokakucho reached the open skies over Tokyo, Super GUTS member Shin Asuka attacked her, but to no avail—Kokakucho was intangible to laser beams, rendering them ineffective. However, Ryo Yumimura and Tsutomu Nakajima arrived with a new weapon: the Anti-Plasma Bomb. They fired it, forcing Kokakucho back into her cloud form and causing her to dissipate.

Later, Kokakucho reappeared at the site of the second Gazort's attack years prior, absorbing the residual plasma energy still lingering in the air. Super GUTS was unable to stop her, as the massive influx of plasma energy had empowered Kokakucho to resist all their attacks. Even Ultraman Dyna struggled to fend her off due to her strategic use of long-range attacks, until a thick mist descended over the area. At that moment, Mayumi, who happened to be there, saw a vision of her deceased boyfriend, Takuma, appear in front of her.

This vision distracted Kokakucho, just as Takuma had once distracted Gazort, giving Dyna the time he needed to switch to Miracle Type. As the mist cleared, Kokakucho unleashed a thunder cloud, but Dyna unexpectedly absorbed its energy, recharging himself and ultimately banishing her to an alternate dimension with the Revolium Wave Attack.Bird of the Phantom Dream

Sometime later, the image of Kokakucho was shown among the Phantom Monster Army before the illusion unveil itself as Moravia. The Power of Thinking of You

Trivia

  • Kokakuchu's episode is a tribute to Gazort II's episode. Initially, the plan was to have Gazort return to this series but the departure of Clitters from Tiga made it impossible for them to reappear.
  • Kokakucho's origin of myth is variable on certain countries:
    • In China, she is known as Gu Huo Niao (姑獲鳥), a bird in Chinese lore that kidnaps girls and raises them as their own.
    • In Japan, the kokakucho is a yōkai called Ubume, a Japanese spirit of a woman who died delivering a child without providing care for her baby.
