GigaBash

GigaBash is a Kaiju brawler game developed by Passion Republic Games, a Malaysian company. It was launched for the PlayStation 4 and 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store on August 5, 2022 and later came to the Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on August 4, 2023.

The game features many original kaiju characters with different backgrounds and playstyles, as well as a paid DLC containing four characters from the Ultraman Series, which released on November 8, 2023.[1]

Production

The first teaser trailer for the game was unveiled at Tokyo Game Show 2019 on September 12, 2019,[2] but was mentioned online by the developers since July 2019.[3]

During the Tokyo Game Show of 2022, a collaboration with the Godzilla franchise was announced.[4] It was later revealed to be paid DLC allowing players to play as Godzilla and three other kaiju from his series, and released on December 9, 2022.

On October 12, 2023, it was announced that an official collab between GigaBash and Tsuburaya was happening, another DLC with 4 characters, with a teaser using the signature swirling paint of the Ultra Q and Ultraman intro. Hours later, the first character in the DLC, Ultraman, was teased,[5] and the following characters were teased each week leading up to the DLC's release on November 8. The DLC is not available in Japan or China due to regional differences and licensing restrictions.[6] On the same day as the release, the game was updated to have crossplay, a replay feature, and beam clashes during battles.[7][8][9]

A contest was held on Twitter from October 27 to November 1 where six winners who correctly guessed the Ultraman DLC's lineup would win GigaBash merchandise.[10] The winners were announced on November 10.[11]

An update featuring new content such as a new Onslaught Mode was announced on February 1, 2024,[12] and released on March 18.[13] On April 25, a second Godzilla DLC titled "Godzilla: Nemesis DLC" was announced to be releasing on May 16, 2024,[14] featuring two more kaiju from the franchise.[15]

On October 20, 2024, during New York Comic-Con 2024, an Ultraman: Rising collaboration DLC was announced for a November 28 release.[16][17][18] Like the other Ultraman DLC regional differences and licensing agreements in China but is available in Japan however.

  • The Ultraman Series is cited as one of the game's inspirations.[19]
    • Gigaman, an original character from the game, serves as a tribute to Ultraman, while Pipijuras was inspired by tokusatsu aliens from the Showa era, with its claws specifically inspired by Alien Baltan and Alien Temperor.[20][21] The Ultraman DLC's launch trailer highlights this by having Ultraman and Baltan come to Gigaman and Pipijuras's aid respectively.
    • Prior to the DLC's announcement, the game's official Twitter account posted art celebrating Ultraman Day on July 10, 2023.[22]
  • This is second game after Godzilla: Battle Line where Godzilla and Ultraman are in the same game via collabs.
