What Percy Saw! is a magazine story.
Plot
When the Fat Controller sends Percy to collect a goods train, he spots a group of gnomes and pixies in a garden centre near the line. His driver explains that they are painted models which people put in their gardens.
Back at the Main Station, the other engines laugh upon hearing the story. While Duck mocks Percy, Thomas comforts him as they all make mistakes.
Later, while taking a passenger train along his branch line, Thomas spots another group of gnomes and pixies. This time, they are not statues, and Thomas frets when they go to board Annie and Clarabel. His driver laughs and explains that they are a group of schoolchildren in costumes and that Bertie is to meet them at the Main Station to take them to the town hall to put on a play.
When Thomas reaches the station, Percy is once again shocked by what he sees, as is Duck. Even after it is all explained, the engines are not sure what to believe.
The next day, when Thomas passes the garden centre, the gnomes and pixies are gone. He jokes to himself that they must have walked off.
