Too Heavy

Too Heavy is a magazine story. The first part of this story is titled Erosion.

Plot

After being stranded for a long time after the tracks buckled, Henry is finally rescued when two cranes arrive. Daisy is embarrassed as she could have warned the other engines about the danger, however joins Gordon and James in teasing Henry back at the sheds. She mocks Henry for being heavy and old-fashioned, while she is modern and lightweight. Henry, sick of being teased, retorts that he would like to see her try and pull a heavy goods train.

While the line is closed for inspection, surveyors find it is unsafe and retaining walls are built to prevent further erosion. Trees and shrubs are planted alongside the retaining wall so that their roots will keep it held down.

Eventually, the Fat Controller re-opens the line, however Daisy is not pleased and refuses to go out. Duck teases her for being scared, however Daisy retorts that she is not and that steam engines do not understand the delicate temperment of a modern railcar.

The Fat Controller is cross that Daisy is refusing to go out. Just then, Henry returns from pulling a heavy goods train over the seaside line. Daisy commends him for his bravery, however Henry states that he was not scared at all, since the workmen have done such a good job repairing the line. Daisy realises that if a heavy engine like Henry can use the line, then surely a lightweight railcar like herself can too and is no longer quite so quick to tease Henry.
