- "Roads, not railways, are useful. Tear up all your tracks and turn 'em into roads is what I say!"

Thomas' Trick is a magazine story.
Plot
A new section of line is being built. The workmen are preparing the ground. One day, whilst stopped at a signal, Thomas meets George the grumpy old steamroller who tells Thomas that railways should be ripped up and turned into roads. Next day, there is a thick mist and a worker tells Thomas that the ground where they are working is too uneven but George will not help because he is against railways. The thick mist gives Thomas an idea; he tells George to come and flatten a bumpy piece of road, and George - not knowing it is the work site where they are laying new tracks - agrees. Soon the line is open and George is furious when Thomas tells him that he helped to make it!
