The Strange Sound is a magazine story.
Plot
It is a very hot day and the weather is making Thomas feel upset and tired. Thomas is looking forward to a rest at the main station once his work is done. Percy, who is shunting in the nearby yard, is feeling tired too.
The two engines begin quarrelling about who was working harder but The Fat Controller tells them to stop and go for a drink at the water tower.
When the two arrive, Duck is already there. Suddenly, a quacking sound is heard. Thomas and Percy are surprised and think it is coming from Duck. It turns out it is coming from a different kind of duck, as Thomas' driver finds the animal having a swim inside the water tower.

Goofs
- In the third illustration, Thomas' wheels are uncoloured.
- The water tower changes from square in the eighth illustration to round in the tenth. The colouring portion after the story, which is based on the tenth illustration, goes back to the square shape. Duck's running board and wheels also change from red and white respectively to both being grey in the same illustrations.
