The Strange Sign! is a magazine story.
Plot
One evening, Thomas is working late hauling goods. The wind is very strong tonight and keeps blowing in his face. As he approaches Wellsworth, he sees the sign creak in the wind. All of a sudden, the sign snaps and falls onto the track! Thomas brakes hard but he cannot stop in time and breaks the sign into pieces.
The stationmaster hears the commotion and makes sure everyone is alright. He and Thomas' driver pick up the remains of the sign. The stationmaster goes to ring the Fat Controller and explain what has happened. The Fat Controller immediately instructs some workmen to make a new sign. Early next morning, the sign is installed. However, the stationmaster is quick to notice a spelling error. The sign now says Weltsworth!
The workmen apologise for their mistake but state they do not have the time to make a new one for the rest of the day. Thomas wonders how to fix the problem when his driver spots a gardener trimming the hedges around the area. The driver speaks to the gardener and asks him to trim the hedges closest to the platform to say Wellsworth. Thomas thinks the hedge is now the best station sign on Sodor!
