The Special Award is a magazine story.
Plot
One morning, as she rolls out of her shed, Daisy hears The Fat Controller speaking to the stationmaster. The Fat Controller tells him of a special visitor coming to the island who will be giving out a special award. Daisy is intrigued and tells James about it, who begins to boast that the award is for him being splendid.
The news soon spreads and the other engines begin to debate about the recipient of the award. One by one, the engines go to get a thorough cleaning for the event and the station is also cleaned and has flowers planted all around.
By the next morning, everything looks beautiful and Harold arrives with the visitor. After an inspection of the station, the visitor hands The Fat Controller a big silver plate. The two men share their thanks and the visitor leaves. The Fat Controller tells his engines that the man was a mainland railway director and the award was for the cleanest and most efficient railway, which Sodor has won!
