The Perfect Engine is a magazine story.
Plot
One day, Thomas takes The Fat Controller to the harbour to meet his grandchildren who are staying for the weekend. On the same boat is a film crew with a lot of equipment. The producer introduces himself and states that he would like an engine to appear in the film. Stephen suggests using Thomas and The Fat Controller and the producer agree.
On the way to the main station, Thomas meets Bertie who was taking children to school but had broken down. The Fat Controller tells Bertie that Thomas can take the children. Once at the school, the producer asks the teacher, the schoolchildren and Stephen and Bridget if they would like to be extras in the movie. Everyone happily accepts the offer!
Next day, Thomas is polished and the actors are put in old fashioned costumes. The cameras begin filming people boarding Annie and Clarabel and then follows Thomas to the beach from the back of a moving van. Thomas has a great time and hopes people enjoy watching the film as much as he had being in it!
