- "I did help Tom, after all."
- ― Duck
The Boatyard is a magazine story.
Plot
Duck enjoys passing a little boatyard on his branch line. One day, there is a "FOR SALE" sign at the front of the yard. The boatyard is going to have to close. The men have been offered jobs at the other boatyard on the other side of the island but they do not want to go.
One day, on the way home from the seaside with some children who are drawing old boats, Duck passes the boatyard as usual. However, a child's drawing gets blown out the carriage window. Tom - who works at the boatyard - catches it and it gives him an idea. A few days later, the "FOR SALE" sign is gone and a new sign reading "Model Boat Museum" has been put up. Tom and his men have constructed models of old ships and Tom has the job of selling tickets.
