The Birthday Cake! is a magazine story from 1993.
Plot
It will soon be Stephen Hatt's birthday and he and his sister will be visiting their grandparents for the event. The Fat Controller invites his engines and their crews to the party, though no-one is sure what to gift Stephen. The Fat Controller, however, has an idea; he calls a bakery and asks the Baker to make an extra special cake.
Preparations begin for the party with lots of decorations and a table full of food. James is tasked with picking up the children when their boat arrives, much to his delight. Not long before James is due back, The Fat Controller's telephone rings. The baker sadly informs him that his van has broken down and must wait for a breakdown lorry. Immediately, Thomas is sent out to collect the cake.
Thomas hurries as fast as he can to collect the cake and he returns just as James arrives. The Fat Controller grandly reveals the cake to his grandson and it is shaped just like an engine! Everyone is delighted and Stephen makes a birthday wish to someday run the railway like his grandfather.
