Plot
One morning, Thomas finds out that a new theatre is to be opened at Wellsworth and the Mayor will hold a fireworks display to celebrate the event. Thomas asks the Fat Controller if he can go, but is told that Daisy will be taking the passengers there and he already has a job later in the evening.
On his way to the far side of the Island to pick up some trucks, Thomas runs over some detonators and is informed by Percy's guard that he has broken down up ahead. While there, Bertie passes by and asks Thomas about the detonators.
By the time Thomas makes his return trip, the fireworks display is over. Bertie takes the workmen in charge of the display home along with their spare fireworks, but breaks down on a level crossing. When he and his driver hear Thomas approaching, Bertie has the idea to warn Thomas using the spare fireworks. The colourful fireworks light up the darkness and Thomas is able to safely stop just before he reaches Bertie. Bertie remarks that he would not have had the idea if he had not met Thomas earlier, while Thomas remarks that he got to see a fireworks display after all.
