Percy and Terence

Percy and Terence is a magazine story.

Plot

Percy does not mind being the smallest engine on the railway as he knows he is very useful, but sometimes the bigger engines tease him for this. One day, Gordon tells Percy not to pull so many trucks at once due to his size. This makes Percy cross.

The stationmaster then arrives with a special job for Percy. He is to carry away the wood from the trees that are being felled in the forest. When Percy arrives, he finds Terence helping clear the trees. Percy, delighted to see someone smaller than him, teases Terence by telling him not to pull so many trees at once. Terence rebukes Percy by saying he is very strong, but Percy says he can carry more logs in his trucks than Terence can pull on his own.

Suddenly, disaster strikes as, due to the work being done, the earth on the hillside crumbles and buries Percy. Percy calls out to Terence for help, but Terence is not too sure he should do such heavy work after what Percy had said to him. Of course, Terence is only teasing and is happy to help Percy. He pulls Percy away from the earth and then begins to clear it from the tracks. Percy thanks Terence and apologises for what he said. Terence reminds Percy that no-one has to be big to be useful and Percy agrees to tell Gordon just that.
