Minis is a range of Thomas & Friends toys produced by Mattel/Fisher-Price. It was released in 2015 as part of the 70th Anniversary of The Railway Series.

History

In 2015, Mattel released a brand new Thomas & Friends toy range called Minis, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Thomas & Friends. The range features numerous characters in a variety of different themes. They are small sized, each acquiring a 4-wheeled chassis configuration and a hook and loop coupling system. Tender engines have their tenders moulded behind their cabs and boilers. The two primary methods of distribution for the Minis are blind bags and visible packs. The blind bags have individual codes to identify and distinguish which bag contains which Mini. The blind bag releases in 2015 were split into four separate waves, released gradually throughout the year, each with its own unique set of Minis. Play-sets with exclusive Minis and various multi-packs were also released in parts of the world, gradually becoming available internationally during the end of 2015 and early 2016. The themes released in 2015 were: Classics, Robo, Dino, Chillin', Racers, Old School, Neon, Spooky and Metallic, with Christmas and Warriors joining the line-up during the end of the year, as exclusive Minis to 2 multi-packs. Mattel also released a cross-over theme, DC Super Friends, that included multiple characters dressed up as various Superheroes and Supervillains from the DC Comics range. The Thomas and Friends Minis have been one of the most successful toy ranges for Mattel and statistics show, within the first 10 months of 2015, in Walmart Stores alone, they sold more than 5 million Minis. Internationally, the Minis have also achieved astounding sales.

Because of the immense popularity and demand of the Minis, Mattel continued to expand the ever-growing and highly successful toy range in 2016, incorporating a variety of new themes and characters into the popular toy-line, as well as creating new Minis for some previously established themes from 2015. The brand new themes introduced for 2016, included: Sweets, Electrified, Sports, Creatures, Graffiti and Core Moments, joined with an exclusive theme for the US/Canada called Tootsie, as well as Glow in the Dark and Insects, was released in late-2016. Mattel continued the much loved DC Super Friends theme with a plethora of new additions to the line-up. In late-2016, came along the newest cross-over theme SpongeBob SquarePants, that featured a variety of Minis dressed up as popular characters from the hit television show. A majority of the Classics theme was re-released and also received new characters into the line-up. Metallic, Spooky and Racers also got brand new additions to their line-up, as well as a few re-releases. Rolling stock was also added to the range for the first time in 2016. Many Play-sets were also released, which contain exclusive Minis, along with 4 (with a fifth released in 2017) small Speedy Launchers, that also arrived with exclusive Minis each. The blind bag waves in 2016 contain previously released Minis, titled 'returning favourites' as well as brand new introductions mixed into each series. The codes were re-generated, starting again from Code: 01.

2017 was the third year for the Minis range and Mattel released brand new Minis themes including: Steel, Construction, Aquatic, Night Time, Space, Monster and Animals, as well as new characters incorporated into the Classics theme. It was also the second year for the Tootsie theme (exclusive only to the US/Canada), as new additions were also announced. A new crossover theme was also announced for 2017, that being the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. For the first time, road vehicles were added to the range.

In 2018, several new Minis themes were introduced. These included Back to School, Neon Splatter, Fruit, Pop Art, Monkey, Robot, Camo and Fantasy. Also released in this series included a birthday-themed Thomas, Neon Glow in the Dark and Light-Ups.

In 2019, themes such as Pets, Rainbow, Holidays, Icky, Sushi, X-ray and Medieval were added. Also released were new engines in the Classic theme and a new series of Fizz & Go packs that included tiny animal and human figures.

It was confirmed that the Minis range would continue into 2020. This is the first year to feature two waves instead of 4. Wave 1 features themes based on Hawaiian, Ice Cream, Ice & Snow, On the Farm, Cowboy, Galaxy, Music and Classic 75th. Wave 2 features themes based on Anniversary, Racing, Recycling, Animals, Vegetables, Fast Food, Three Little Pigs, Aquarium, New Look, Ghosts and Space. 2020 also saw a new packaging method: Each blindpacked Mini now comes in a box strapped to a wagon not to dissimilar to those made for the Motorized Railway range, in varying colours in between.

2021 also saw a new wave of Minis introduced, and much like all current Thomas toy lines, the models aim to reproduce a design aesthetic based on the CGI series despite running alongside the Flash-animated reboot. A handful of new characters were introduced to the Classics line (Whiff, Rajiv, and Flying Scotsman), all of which are repaints of existing characters. The 24th was release in the later half of 2021.

The 25th wave featuring repeats were released in early 2022. This marks the only year to not feature any new themes.

In 2025, the width of vehicles chassis' was shortened so that vehicles can fit on Motorized/Push Along track.

2016 Series refers to the second range of vehicles released in four series of blind bags throughout 2016. Beginning this year, the range is no longer a Walmart exclusive, and each blind bag series is numbered on the bags and collector checklists for identification. From the release of series 4, production had moved from Thailand to China.

Mini and Mighty Malaysia Tour 2016 was an event organized by Thomas Town Puteri Harbour which ran from the 6 to 24 April 2016 at Utama Shopping Centre. It featured a play area containing large versions of the original 2015 series engines.

Trivia

• Each engine in the blind bags has its own respective item code. This can be used to distinguish a particular model apart.
• The range was first produced in Thailand having weights inside. Some 2016/4 models continuing into 2017, the production moved to China onwards, removing the weights. The overall design and make have relatively stayed the same.
• Classic Diesel 10 was present in both 2015/1 and 2015/2. It is unknown why he was repeated.
• Hiro's models have his nameplate on his boiler rather than his smoke deflectors, possibly due to size reasons. Strangely, though, his Steel Superman prototype shows his nameplate on his smoke deflectors.
• Classic Charlie is missing his brass fittings on the side of his smokebox, which was fixed on his Robo variant, but not on any other variant.
• Characters in the blind bag releases can be clearly visible in certain areas of the bag.
• Multiple prototypes differed from the final model:
  • Classic Gator had dark grey wheels.
  • Neon Iron Bert had black wheels, thick side stripes and an extra stripe on his top.
  • Racer Spencer had black wheels.
  • Racer Thomas says Sir Topham Hatt on the side.
  • Metallic James' second prototype had red wheels.
  • Classic Charlie had an unprinted roof.
  • Old School Scruff had a black footplate.

    • Victor as Hawkman has been released in Wave 3, but Rosie as Hawkgirl is present on this checklist even though she has not been released in any blind bag series. Even the checklist listed it as Victor as Hawkman.

• In 2016, the blind bags packaging went through aesthetic changes. Now each wave acquire their own respective blind bag packaging designs, displaying images on the bags of models included in that particular wave. The bags also received indicators at the top left corner, showing which wave is which.
• In 2016, all of the blind bag codes were regenerated, restarting at Code: 01 (excluding the 2017 series).
• The Troublesome Truck is the first piece of rolling stock introduced in the Minis range.
• Racing Flynn has the US emergency number (911) written on the top of his ladder. Since the same model was released worldwide, this emergency contact would bear no relevance internationally.
• Jelly Fish Iron Bert has "Bert" on his chassis instead of "Ir-Bert" and his face mask is actually Iron 'Arry's as there is no stubble present.
• Presently, Iron 'Arry is the only Mini not to have a Classic model despite having a DC Super Friends™ variant.

• From the release of 2016/4, the Minis production facility has been moved from Thailand to China. Coincidentally this wave also had re-used numerical codes that were also seen from other waves in 2016. They also had gaps in between chronological sequence. This is the first wave that this has occurred.
• Ferdinand's name is misspelt as "Ferdnand", due to spacing.
• In the UK and international versions, 2017/1 was the first wave not to feature a Classic Thomas.
• Bertie is the first road vehicle to be released in the Minis range.
• Construction Toby features the reboot design of Bob the Builder in his cab, as well as his new 'B' logo all over Toby's paintwork. This makes it the very first variant which features a trademarked character but is not part of a crossover theme. Both franchises are owned by Mattel, meaning no license was required. The Bob the Builder toy promo was also featured on the US checklist, showing four die-cast models.
• Light Up Rosie was originally going to be made in her original livery, but the final product features her in her current one.
• Ashima's classics variant has pink wheels, similar to her Hyper Glow TrackMaster model.
• Clarabel's model has her facing forwards instead of backwards.
• The Boost 'N Blast set box features Thomas in Belle's body.
• Rebecca's model does not have her tender.
• New Look Emily is the first piece of merchandise that depicts Emily with her number 12, which she gained in the twenty-fourth series episode, Emily to the Rescue.
• Whiff, Flying Scotsman, and Rajiv share the same body moulds as Thomas, Gordon and Emily respectively.
