Keeping Warm! is a magazine story from 1993.
Plot
It is cold and wet on the island of Sodor. Thomas wakes up one morning shivering until his fireman lights his fire. He is coupled to a truck and heads out to a farm on his branch line. He is going to be collecting potatoes for the market. Thomas' driver helps the farmer load the potato sacks and the farmer gives him his own sack as a thank you.
Once the job is done, Thomas finds Gordon at the main station. Thomas notices a coach in the express that contains smartly set tables. Gordon explains that this is the buffet coach that passengers can have a warm meal on. Thomas wishes he could pull it. The Fat Controller tells Thomas that a section of the loop line is being repaired and he must bring them their supplies.
Thomas hurries his way along with wind and rain lashing at him. The engineers begin to unload him and Thomas laments that a buffet coach could help warm them in the cold weather. Thomas' driver gets an idea. He takes the potatoes he was given and puts them on the fireman's shovel to cook them in the firebox. Once every potato is cooked, Thomas' driver calls out to the engineers who are delighted to have a hot meal and Thomas is happy to have helped even without a buffet coach.
