Art Transporters

An art transporter is a type of narrow gauge bogie wagon used for storing artwork. At least three of these have been seen at the Blue Mountain Quarry. It is unclear what purpose they serve there.

Technical Details

Basis

The art transporters are based on the same type of wagon used at the Manod Slate Quarry near Blaenau Ffestiniog, Wales during World War II. These narrow gauge bogie wagons were used for storing artwork from the Tate, British Museum and National Gallery and were stored underground in the Art Bunker built inside the mine. The Art Bunker remained open until 1983, when Manod returned to being a slate quarry. At least three of the wagons have been preserved.

Livery

The art transporters are painted grey with red frames and handrails and black wheels.
