Ambulances are vehicles that transport patients and medical supplies.

Technical Details

The ambulance shares the same design as the panel vans, which are loosely based on cars made between 1936 and the 1950s.

Livery

The ambulances are painted white with a red cross on the sides and back of them. They have silver hubcaps. In the books, magazines and merchandise ranges, it is often seen with "SODOR AMBULANCE" written in black lettering.

• The ambulance's model was reused from the white van with added red crosses.
• One of the signs on the Sodor Search and Rescue Centre building features a silhouette of the ambulance.
• The ambulance has had several different appearances:
  • In the sixth series episode, Percy's Chocolate Crunch, it is a Panel Van.
  • In the book, Thomas Noisy Book, it is a box van as illustrated by Owen Bell.
  • In the Mini Books, Henry Goes to the Hospital and Learn with Thomas, it resembles a 1968 Mercedes Benz ambulance as illustrated by Ken Stott.
  • In most magazine stories, it is illustrated as a Step Van.
  • In the magazine story, Station, Station, Station, it is an ambulance bus. A red bus of a similar design appeared in the magazine story, Sodor Goes Pop!.
  • In the magazine story, Important Passengers!, there is a green hospital bus, based on the same design as Bertie.
  • In the Wooden Railway merchandise range, the ambulance is a Morris Commercial J-type van, the same basis as the Sodor Mail Van.
