Charlie

Charlie is Mouse's brother.

Personality

For such a young boy, Charlie has been through a great deal since the virus. The traumas he has experienced have left him scarred and taught him and his sister, MOUSE, how to survive at all costs.

They share a very close bond and Charlie is protective of Mouse. Charlie distrusts strangers and it will take time for him to feel safe and accept others. Charlie is genuine – what you see is what you get – and enjoys light-hearted mischief-making; even if the receivers of this aren’t as appreciative!

History

Series 4

During the Techno Invasion, Salene finds Mouse on the streets and brings her to the Mall. Charlie follows them and it's revealed they are siblings. They both start off very shy and they do not say much. It takes a long time for the rest of the tribe to get contact with him and Mouse, Ellie being the first to hear them when she tries to commit suicide, but as time goes by they feel safer in the Mall and they start talking after a while.

When Mouse and Charlie refuse to tell the Mall Rats their names, Salene gives tries to trick them into giving them their names, so Salene gives them names that they don't like: Poo and Pong. Afterwards, against Mouse's will, Charlie tells Salene and Pride their real names. But unlike Mouse, Charlie is shy.

Surprisingly, Charlie and Mouse went to get food for Ellie when she was about to be sent away. Not long after starting to talk and beginning to join in more with the tribe Charlie disappears and is believed to have been taken by the Technos.

Trivia

  • Charlie is one of the two characters on the show to share the same name with their own actor (except there is a slight variation in the name). The other being Ryan.
  • Charlie and Mouse were slaves before joining the Mall Rats. This could be an explanation for their initial timidity.
  • The first word that Charlie says to a member of the Mall Rats is 'eat'. This is directed to Ellie, who starves herself and attempts suicide.
  • Charlie shares a few similarities with Paul. Both were written off the show not long after their first appearances. Both characters also have sisters who had longer tenures on the show.
    • It is never revealed why the character was written off, but it's presumed that his actor couldn't be in the show anymore for an unrevealed personal reason, which is a common trope in the show as many characters disappear due to their actor's sudden unavailability.
    • It's worth noting that Charlie's actor, Charley Murphy Samau, did not act again until 2008, which was 6 years after his work on The Tribe. Meaning he had taken a long break for an undisclosed reason after acting on The Tribe.
  • It's believed by some fans that Sammy's role was originally meant for Charlie. This is mostly due to the fact that in his last appearance, Charlie doubts whether the Technos were actually evil as he said: "Are they really so dangerous? They didn't hurt us." Giving weight to the theory that Charlie would have done the same things as Sammy did had he not disappeared, such as being addicted to the VR Paradise program and his relationship with Mouse becoming strained.
  • Out of all the main cast members, Charlie has the shortest amount of appearances with only 12 episodes. He is followed by Paul who only appeared in 16 episodes.
  • Charlie is never mentioned by name again after Series 4, not even in the novels.
  • Charlie is the only Mall Rat not to appear in The Tribe: Reunion Manga that was released for the 20th anniversary of the series. The reason for his exclusion from the manga is unknown.
