Stanley Martin Lieber is an American comic-book writer, editor and publisher, as well as former executive vice president of Marvel Comics. He is the co-creator of Spider-Man, The Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, and the X-Men, among others.
Biography
Lee was born on December 28, 1922, in New York City. He resided in several parts of New York throughout his life. His father, Jack Lieber, was a trained dress cutter, who worked after the Great Depression. Both of his parents are Romanian-born Jewish immigrant. He also has a younger brother named Larry Lieber. Growing up, Lee enjoyed writing, and was heavily influenced by books and movies, specifically those with Errol Flynn playing heroic roles.
Well into his teen years, his family was living in a one-bedroom apartment at in The Bronx. He and his brother shared a bedroom, while their parents slept on a foldout couch. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx. He graduated from high school in 1939, at the early age of 16½. He then joined the WPA Federal Theatre Project. Before that, Lee worked part-time jobs such as writing obituaries for a news services and press releases for the National Tuberculosis Center. He also sold subscriptions to the New York Herald Tribune newspaper.
