The Clinton neighborhood, located in midtown Manhattan, is a battle-scarred urban wasteland ravaged by the Green Poison pandemic. This smallpox variant, unleashed on Black Friday, decimated the population and collapsed societal order, transforming Clinton into a chaotic battleground where survival is a daily struggle.
Pre-Pandemic
Before the outbreak, Clinton was a vibrant, working-class neighborhood west of Midtown Manhattan. Known for it's cultural diversity, it was home to a mix of Irish, Puerto Rican, and other immigrant communities, with a history tied to tenements, shipping docks, and organized crime. The neighborhood boasted bustling theaters, restaurants, and markets, but also struggled with gentrification, pushing out long-time residents as luxury developments crept in.
Clinton was a place of contrasts: gritty dive bars stood alongside trendy eateries, and historic brownstones clashed with glass high-rises. It's proximity to Times Square made it a hub for aspiring artists, while its waterfront along the Hudson hinted at it's industrial past. Community ties were strong, with local churches, schools, and unions fostering a sense of identity amid rapid change.
The Green Poison Outbreak
When the Green Poison hit during Black Friday, Clinton’s dense population and heavy foot traffic made it a perfect vector for the virus. Infected money, passed hand-to-hand in markets and stores, spread the disease rapidly. Within days, the neighborhood’s hospitals, like St. Luke’s-Roosevelt, were overwhelmed, and makeshift quarantine zones popped up in schools and community centers. Panic set in as bodies piled up faster than they could be cleared.
The government’s response was chaotic. The Joint Task Force (JTF), a coalition of police, National Guard, and first responders, tried to maintain order, but resources dwindled. Clinton’s proximity to critical infrastructure, like the Lincoln Tunnel, made it a priority for containment, but the JTF’s overstretched forces couldn’t hold the line. As the virus claimed thousands, survivors turned to desperation - looting shops, barricading apartment blocks, or fleeing the city entirely.
