Vera Kane was a recurring character in the first season. She was portrayed by Christine Willes and debuted in "Murphy's Law".
Vera was a religious leader on the Ark. Her church — in response to both the nuclear apocalypse and surviving in space — was Earth-centric, seeing "going home" (returning to the ground) as a type of heaven. The church kept a small tree alive on the Ark as a symbol of the living Earth.
Throughout the Series
In Murphy's Law, Vera is first seen watering the tree when Kane walks in. She asks him if he wants to add some water to the tree but he declines. Nygel makes a remark to Kane that she thinks Vera is wasting water by watering the tree.
In Contents Under Pressure, Vera comforts Kane after he is hated on for sacrificing hundreds of innocent people in The Culling. He regrets what he did, but Vera assures him that he is still her son.
In Unity Day, Vera is one of the bombing victims after Diana causes a bomb to explode during the Unity Day Celebration up on the Ark. Kane holds her in his arms and comforts her, reciting the Traveler's Blessing, until she dies due to her injuries.Personality
She was a very strong woman, becoming a leader in her Earth-centric church. She also had a soft and caring side, shown in interactions with her son, Councilman Marcus Kane, despite his apparently leaving the church.

She has dark-brown hair, and she has brown eyes. She appears to be in her late 50's/early 60's.
Relationships
Marcus Kane
Both Marcus and Vera love each other very much, as being that they are the only two of their family left. Vera has a very kind personality for Kane, and she believes he can do great things. However, Marcus is often embarrassed by his mother's peaceful nature. He also held her while she died from the bombing in Unity Day, and her death deeply saddened him. He later planted the Eden Tree on Earth once he landed.Appearances
