Bailey Nune

Lieutenant Bailey Nune is a character on The Rookie. She was a recurring character in the third and fourth seasons until she was promoted to a main character beginning in "Heart Beat". She is also a main character in the fifth, sixth, and seventh seasons. She is the wife of John Nolan. She is played by Jenna Dewan.

Biography

Bailey is a firefighter in the Los Angeles Fire Department; she also serves as a 1st Lieutenant reserve in the Army National Guard and teaches Capoeira (Afro-Brazilian martial art).

Season 3

She first meets John Nolan in "Threshold" when she gets locked out of the house where she's dog-sitting for his neighbors, Ronnie and Dylan. Bailey is frantic because she was only wearing a towel from a shower. Feeling empathy, John lends her the spare key they gave him along with a spare hoodie. She thanks him and says he made her day better.

Season 4

Bailey attends Lopez' and Evers' wedding as John's date, but when the wedding is aborted, John travels to Guatemala with other cops to rescue Lopez, and Bailey does not appear again until "Five Minutes". John runs into her at a crime scene and asks her out after some chagrin over not staying in touch very well, and she accepts.

That evening the two opt to stake out a robbery suspect instead of going to a fancy restaurant, and Bailey spends the night with John. Later, she texts him to say she won't be going out with him again, but John shows up outside the grocery store where her station cohort is shopping and convinces her that she shouldn't give up on them so quickly.

Bailey reads John and Lucy the riot act about entering a burning building in "In the Line of Fire", saying, "You don't see us running toward gunfire."

In "Red Hot", John finds out that Bailey is a Lieutenant in the Army Reserve, and in "Fire Fight" she tells him that she was in gymnastics all through high school and college.

In "Poetic Justice", she helps in gathering info on an arsonist. She later found it hard to believe her Captain Fred was responsible for arson and murders. However, she decided to go against John's wishes by searching the house and discovering incriminating evidence. She was nearly caught but John was able to distract Fred, helping her to escape. She gives him her stolen discovery and becomes sad that Fred could be responsible. Just as she was going to question Fred with Nolan and Lopez, his house explodes and they are all nearly caught in the blast.

In "Fire Fight", Bailey survives the explosion, but her leg is seriously injured from being impaled by shrapnel, she stays at John's house while she recuperates, and their relationship seems to get more serious. She also learns Fred was set up after an alibi came up when he was in Nevada. She and John realized the killer was still out there, most likely diverting attention from themselves to continue the spree. Much later, John ended up being captured by the real killer but was able to fight him off and arrest him once and for all. Bailey later visited him in the hospital, celebrating ending the killing spree and honoring Fred.

In "Breakdown", John mentions to Lucy that he's considering proposing to Bailey. He takes Bailey to a restaurant with outdoor seating for two, where they both admit to being in love with each other, but before John can continue the conversation, a man comes over to say hello to Bailey and tells John that he's Bailey's husband.

In "Heart Beat", Bailey admits to John that she's been trying to divorce the man, Jason Wyler, for over a year; Jason was emotionally abusive and manipulative, and she didn't expect him to be released for two more years. After confronting Jason, the latter plants cocaine in Bailey's car and gets her arrested for drug possession, which could end Bailey's career and standing in her profession. John and Bailey end up asking Oscar Hutchinson for advice on dealing with narcissist psychopaths, and with that information they set up a situation where Jason will betray his dealers, but instead the dealers learn of Jason's betrayal and try to kill him. The end result is that the cops take out some of the dealers, arrest the others, and Jason is sent to jail for eight more years. Bailey then gets her wish of divorcing him. John also tells Bailey to get a restraining order should Jason try to find her.

In "Real Crime", she serves as a paramedic and is called in when TV producer Morris Mackey is killed. When she is asked if she thought Aaron killed his reality show’s producer, she denies it, saying he would never do anything like that. However, her confidence is questioned, considering her ex-husband, which catches her off guard, flustering her a bit and resulting in her admitting that maybe she's not the best judge of character. It is also revealed she was a back-up dancer in a music video, surprising Nolan.

In "Day In The Hole", she accompanies John when he is temporarily transferred to the Frontera Police Department, located near the border. They are joined by his brother Pete Nolan, Pete's fiancée Chastity Sneed, Ellroy Basso and Nell Forester. She has a good time relaxing and antiquing with Nell - before John arrests a federal criminal whose gang goes after him and his associates. Bailey takes on two thugs on her own before rounding them up with the rest of the criminals John and Ellroy subdue. Afterward, she admits the experience was exciting, before she helps in directing the arriving cops to the thugs locked up in the cell.

Season 5

In "The Choice", Bailey is lured into a lethal trap by a follower of murderess Rosalind Dyer; Dyer hopes to force John to kill her in order to save Bailey, but Bailey is rescued before the trap can finish the job. Afterward, Bailey proposes to John, who accepts.

Season 6

In "Strike Back", she calls John to tell him that the AC was broken. John quickly comes in the midst of patrol and fixes it for her. She is relieved but becomes stressed when Celina mentioned the last shift curse. John tries to reassure her but she does not seem convinced of it. At the end, she is dismayed the wedding venue was unavailable because of unforeseen demolition. However, Aaron overheard and offered to help by offering his family "spiritual oasis", as repayment for Bailey's part in saving him.

In "The Hammer", she and John are putting the final touches to the wedding. She is revealed to be in contact with Henry, so he could surprise his father. Much later, she and John officially get married but Celina gets kidnapped while investigating a lead and John has to save her but Bailey is okay with it, simply telling her new husband not to get killed and John tells her that he loves her more than ever. At the end, John is successful in saving Celina and returns home to find Bailey waiting for him asleep on bed. He realized all the wedding venue preparations drained her and joins her in relaxing. The two remarked on how they had a flight but with all the stress, they earned this rest and cuddle up on the bed while celebrating their union.

In "Secrets and Lies", Bailey changes her mind about wanting children. Her yearning for her own kids has grown stronger after failing to adopt a child, forcing Nolan to reconsider their "no children" agreement. She tries various ways to convince Nolan to no avail. Frustrated, they seek a fertility clinic in Punch Card. It turns out she has a defect in her fallopian tube, which lowers the chance of her having a baby, but that she could still conceive via IVF. The pair decides it is best for them to not have children since Bailey thinks she would not be able to take another round of hope, disappointment and hope again. Later, however, they decide to start looking for a child to adopt.
