Orbs are alien slavers who capture robots to use as labour. Their primary interest is mining death crystals on planet Dread —- a hazardous task at best, due to the shrikebats inhabiting the cave, and the ever-present threat of a visit by Chaos himself.
History
The Transformers cartoon continuity
A group of Orbs armed with electrified spears captured Kup and led him back to their mine in Queeg Mountain, where he was put to work mining death crystals with the hundreds of other slave robots. It wasn't until a visit by Chaos disrupted things that Kup was able to escape, though he was unable to free any of the Orbs' other prisoners.
Chaos When the Decepticons arrived on Dread to take over, they immediately killed half the Orb, and put the rest to work in the same manner that the Orb had forced others to work in the mines.
