Satellite surveillance technology is absolutely vital to modern military intelligence. INtricate tracking satellites must be maintained and repaired on site, and as Cobra's network of "eyes-in-the-sky" grows older, more and more repairs are needed, necessitating more technicians capable of withstanding repeated high-G launches and enduring long terms in orbit. Among Cobra’s vast array of specialized infantry forces, few besides the TARGATs are qualified for duty in the dangerous voids of space. The ASTRO-VIPERS are the some of the only soldiers capable of withstanding repeated G-force launch and extensive tours of duty orbiting the Earth. They were recruited from the ranks of the Strato-Vipers, who are naturally and artificially conditioned for high-altitude flying and G-force maneuvering. Cobranauts pilot the launch and recovery vehicles, man the orbital stations, and do the satellite repair work. Each are issued and trained with an armed Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) Cobranaut propulsion unit which allows them to perform untethered EVA spacewalks. Astro-Vipers like it up in space, where it's cold and dark. Cobra Commander knows he can count on these Vipers not only because of their specialized training and abilities, but also because they are exceptionally ruthless in battle.
History
Canonical/Pre-MUX/Theme History:
The ASTRO-VIPERS are recruited from the ranks of the Strato-Vipers, and are naturally and artificially conditioned for high-altitude flying and G-force maneuvering.
MUX History:
Astro-Vipers continue to serve and work on Cobra's space assets when necessary.
OOC Notes
Unlike most Viper types, Astro-Vipers are NOT available as DCs. Because of the high stats required to be a Astro-Viper, they need to be apped as full OCs (although the FC app can be used for a Viper with basic Astro-Viper stats).
While both Astro-Vipers and Star-Vipers can pilot Cobra's spacecraft, Astro-Vipers are more broadly trained as Cobranaut technicians and space marines, while Star-Vipers are more focused as zero-G combat pilots and aeronautical engineers.
