The planet Gillen-7 was stripped of its resources by a wealthy few, causing considerable unrest among the remaining residents. Those who could afford to fled to Gloaming, a sleep station high above the planet, to wait out the tumult in hypersleep pods. Whether it hatched in the sleepers on Gillen-3 or as the sleepers dreamed inside their pods, the Mara manifested inside their minds.
