In the 1970s, Margery Phipps remarked that Sergeant Benton resembled James Bond, "not the new one, the one before him but without the Australian accent." (AUDIO: Council of War)
Behind the scenes
- While neither of the James Bond actors Margery refers to in Council of War are specified, given the story's 1970s setting, it can be inferred that "the new one" would be Roger Moore, who debuted in the part of James Bond in the 1973 film Live and Let Die. Based on this, "the one before him" (discounting Sean Connery's brief return to the role in Diamonds are Forver) would thereby be George Lazenby, who was Australian and did speak with a noticeable Australian accent.
- In a 2006 interview, Paul McGann remarked that he was the "George Lazenby of Doctor Who" due to his and Lazenby's equally brief tenures in their respective iconic roles (with Lazenby having only portrayed James Bond in a single film (1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service) and McGann having only portrayed the Eighth Doctor on-screen in the 1996 TV movie up to that point).[1]
