In a parallel universe, a cutting beam was a weapon used by the Borg. On Cogen V, the Borg used cutting beams against the Cybermen when they broke their alliance. Through his VISOR, Geordi La Forge was able to detect that the fragmentation and degradation patterns on a Cyberman body found in the wake of the battle was a match with Borg cutting beams.
