Weight

Not to be confused with Falling speed.

Weight is a measure of how far a character can be knocked back horizontally by an attack, if damage is held constant. It also affects vertical knockback in concert with falling speed.

It is usually considered an advantage for a character to be heavy; however, extra weight can make characters more susceptible to combos and chaingrabs. A notable example in Melee is that characters with lower than 87 weight fall down when hit by Fox's shine, and thus are invulnerable to his shine combos. An example in Brawl is that characters at 87 units or heavier except Luigi (though he can be infinite chain grabbed) are susceptible to King Dedede's chain grab while lighter characters are not. In the opposite however, many characters below weight 95 and all below weight 87 have guaranteed down smash hit of Mr. Game & Watch after his down throw if they don't tech the down throw (which is not easy) while it's escapable for all others even when they don't tech. In Brawl, Ice Climbers' infinite chain grabs are easier to perform on lightweights and harder to do on heavyweights. The weight class also explains the fighting style. Typical attributes of heavyweights include large size, high KO power, great attack range, fast falling speed, slow movement and attacks, and poor recovery. Opposite of that, the typical attributes of lightweights are small size, low KO power, slow falling speed, poor range, fast movement and attacks, and good recovery.

These values use a different scale than the later games - heavier characters have lower numbers, representing a direct multiplier in the knockback formula. For comparison purposes, the equivalent value in the newer system is also listed.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Rankings

Here is the order of characters' weights in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

According to the game, weight is the base factor in determining how many powers can be equipped in Smash Run. There are other factors—namely a character's speed—so it is not a direct linear correlation, but as a general rule weight definitely carries a positive correlation: the higher the weight, the greater the number of powers.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Rankings

This is a list of characters' weights in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Mii Fighters now have their weight determined by their class rather than their size modifiers from their creation.

The average weight value of all fighters is rounded up to 96.05, meaning that Pit, Dark Pit, Ivysaur, and Wii Fit Trainer are the characters whose weights are closest to the average.

Trivia

  • In Brawl, the Fighting Alloys all have a weight of 99 (the same as Mario), even though they are modelled after characters of differing weights.
  • In Brawl, Giga Bowser and Wario-Man are programmed to have weights of 400 and 130 respectively; however they cannot be knocked back, so their weight only has an effect on certain stage elements (such as Rainbow Cruise's see-saw platforms).
  • In all games, Link and Captain Falcon always have the same weight.
  • In both Melee and Brawl, Mr. Game & Watch has been tied 2nd for the 2nd lightest character.
    • Ironically enough, Mr. Game and Watch, being two dimensional, is not the lightest character. Logically speaking, he should have no weight at all.
      • Also, Mr. Game & Watch had the greatest increase in weight from Melee to Brawl (60 to 75), while Jigglypuff and Kirby are tied for the second highest weight increase.
  • In Melee, if one measures all the weight and divides it by 26 (NTSC), it will come up 90.33. In PAL, it's 90.66.
    • The same can be applied for Brawl, except it has to be divided by 39 and it will get as close as Ness', Lucas' and Pit's weight. These weights in both Melee and Brawl have 3 people tied for the average weight, but not size.
      • If you do the same with Super Smash Bros. you will get 96.83333333 close again to Ness' weight (88).
  • Despite Ivysaur and Lucario having the same weight in Brawl, Ivysaur actually only weighs 29.2 lb according to the Pokedex while Lucario weighs 119.0 lbs.
  • The lightest you can possibly be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is 5.5, due to Pichus size, combined with lightweight spirits, weight down spirits, Tiny Smash, Light Smash , Ninja Style, Lightning, Poison Mushroom, Palkia on Spear Pillars weight decrease, making you so light, Ganondorf KOs Pichu at 0%, and making Pichu smaller than the Pokeball
