John Byrne is a prolific artist and writer in superhero comics. Byrne was asked to retool Superman continuity in 1986, with The Man of Steel series, following the silver age Superman committing suicide with Gold Kryptonite in Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Byrne was considered a "superstar" after long influential runs on Uncanny X-Men and later Fantastic Four, which had come to an end shortly before he got the Superman offer.
