- If one does count Buddy as a 2015 surfer then this is the 1st year without a a new Christmas surfer.
- This year had the least amount if new World Tour surfers tied with 2015 if one counts Boombot.
- Without Boombot, this is the year that released the fewest restricted surfers, even less than 2015.
- This is the only year that the FIFA World Cup was not held (which was held in Russia).
