Probes[1] are devices used by the Vanguard. Kept aloft by tiny thrusters, they are able to provide illumination, and provide visual resconstructions of past architecture.[2]
Trivia
The probes are practically identical in design and sound (if not size and function) to their counterparts in StarCraft.
