Cosmozoan

A cosmozoan is any living organism that lives in space. While technically any space-dwelling creature can be referred to as a cosmozoan, including bacteria, the term is usually applied to giant lifeforms that might be as large as starships.

Space-Dwelling creatures

Some cosmozoa can be extremely dangerous, while others adhere to a more peaceful lifestyle. Many species are known to plant their eggs on planets and move into space after hatching, others are known to even crossover from other dimensions. Cosmozoa have been found in many sizes, from the relatively small Idran Swarmers to gigantic Crystalline Entities.

Several Starfleet vessels have encountered creatures of this kind, including the U.S.S. Enterprise, the U.S.S. Enterprise-D and the U.S.S. Voyager. Some cosmozoa show signs of sentience, while others seem to be driven mostly by primitive instincts.

In recent years, both Crystalline Entities and Gekli were frequently observed by Federation and Klingon vessels.

Notes

• While not officially cosmozoans in-game, Undine ships could also be considered as some kind of cosmozoan lifeforms.
