The USS Challenger's shuttle Excalibur is lost at Trianguli Ceti-Fescus IV, after the crew discovers a Klingon listening station; the shuttle is driven into it, destroying both shuttle and station. After picking up survivors from Trianguli Ceti, the Challenger stops at Starbase 12 for crew replacements before joining Task Force 31, headed by Captain Hikaru Sulu aboard USS Excelsior. Their mission is to proceed to the Laskahni Confederation. Accompanying Task Force 31 is a 7th Fleet battle group, consisting of Challenger, USS Tai Shan, USS Intrepid II and USS Thagard.
