- The USS Enterprise diverts to Talos IV after receiving a distress call from the SS Columbia. (TOS: "The Cage")
- In an alternate timeline, Christopher Pike’s USS Enterprise is destroyed by a Doomsday Machine that had come back in time from 2373, causing a distortion in the recorded timeline. The Doomsday Machine begins duplicating itself and spreading destruction across the galaxy. Starfleet Command rescinds all standing orders regarding exploratory missions. Code named Operation: Ragnarok, the seemingly endless series of losing battles become colloquially known as "The Doomsday War." (Star Trek: Phase II: "In Harm's Way")
- The Minervon Incident: The USS Minervon is hijacked en route from Vulcan. The hijackers are believed to be members of the radical Sh'ak'atar religious sect. A failed rescue attempt by Starfleet resultes in the hostages being marooned for over a year. The Minervon Incident is used as a case study in the Academy survival course. (Star Trek: SFI)
