Trident (real name unknown) is a former gladiator and current member of the Eternal Champions.
Previous Life and Death
Trident was genetically engineered to help the people of Atlantis fight off the Roman Empire who vowed to sink the Atlanteans into the sea. The half human/half amphibian warrior acted for a while as a gladiator before taking his true role as a the city's protector. Unfortunately, he was crushed when the Romans toppled a stone pillar on Trident. This act also led to the Great Dam of Atlantis failing and sinking the island.
Eternal Champions
The warrior was saved by The Eternal Champion when he required a warrior to help him save the world from The Overlord. Trident was very keen to do his duty, lashing out at humans using The Battle Room to chat, but could not understand the computers used to control the environment. After training, Trident received a bye to the second round after performing the best in practice. After the first round of battles, Trident watched as the five losers were returned to their moments of death, but continued to belittle their efforts. Shadow Yamoto, Larcen Tyler and Midknight made a pact shortly after this to defeat Trident and stand strong against their master. In his fight against Shadow, Trident used his hatred of humans to spur him on but was kicked unconscious by Shadow. His bleeding mouth was enough to whip vampire Midknight into a frenzy.
Trident was later revived, required to attend his first full mission against Nakano Industries. His main task was to work with Slash in stopping any guards from escaping Nakano's office. Against the second wave of defences, Trident boasted about his speed, proving more than a match for the agile machines they fought. He later accompanied the Champions to The Cyberdome, easily blitzing the guards that protected the gun storage. Trident was then required to break down the door to the Ammo Store when Xavier Pendragon's magic failed to work, but was thrown into a tournament by the Cyber-Fighters. The Atlantean was scheduled to fight RAX Coswell and promised to pull his punches against the human, but was betrayed when RAX punched him before the battle. He soon learned that RAX had planned this as a diversion, but Trident still felt he owed RAX revenge.
Whilst trying to escape, RAX realised they could use the guns worn by the rookie fighters, so Trident violently ripped a bio-welded weapon from somebody's arm. Back in 1994 Tokyo, Trident was the only Champion able to evade Nakano's Bio-Keyed weapon. The semi-amphibian leapt onto Nakano's craft, not getting shaken off by the tide, and broke his way into the cockpit. There, he furiously attacked Nakano for his love of war, something that had led to the destruction of his home. For this, Trident shot the controls and destroyed the ship, although at the cost of severe pain to himself. Trident attempted to say that the Bio-Keyed gun remained at the bottom of the ocean, but Jetta Maxx ordered him to remain quiet for his own health.
Special Moves
Trident fights in the Capa Geira style of martial arts, which appears as a form of dance to the uneducated eye. The warrior combined this with his biological weapons to fend off the Ancient Roman Empire:
- Depth Charge Field
- Bio Drain Field
- Bio Stun Field
- Spinning Trident - possibly used to show off after receiving a bye.
- Repulser Field
- Sliding Spinning Trident
- Plasma Bolt
- Liquid Mode
Character
The greenish scaled skin and gills make Trident look more like an armoured fish than a warrior. He supposedly lost his right hand in a fight with a shark, giving him his nickname. Trident is arrogant and proud, often standing perfectly still like a lizard. He supposedly needs to be fully immersed in salt water at least once a day. Trident likes all seafood and everything to do with the sea. He is friendly with other half-human Slash but hates Xavier ever since he started talking in Latin. The other Champions he thinks are mad, but can at least understand RAX.
When first meeting a human, he distrusts every last one of them. He particularly hates Romans from any time period, although may not have met any since his death. Trident also has an unnatural fear of stone pillars.
Trivia
- Trident's weapon made a cameo in the first Megadroid story in the Sonic the Comic store cupboard.
- Since all Champions were returned home after their first adventure, it is unclear what happened to Trident, since Atlantis was destroyed. Trident does have gills, so he could possibly live elsewhere in the ocean, fighting the enemy.
