The Pretender

The Pretender is a complete Sonic the Hedgehog story in Issue 31 of Sonic the Comic. It was later reprinted in Issue 156.

Story

The Emerald Hill Zone is under attack from Badniks once again, but Sonic the Hedgehog is here to save the day. However, he's beaten to it when a new superhero arrives to destroy the Moto Bugs first. Sonic isn't impressed with how easy that was and the newcomer introduces himself as Cosmic, a challenger to Sonic's attempts against Doctor Robotnik. The "pretender" challenges Sonic to a race, which he accepts. Tails is concerned and tells Sonic he may be heading into a trap. A riled Sonic shouts his friend down and begins the race to the edge of the Zone. Sonic gets an early lead due to knowing the Zone, but Cosmic is able to use aerial moves to navigate obstacles. It doesn't help him win and the loops soon take it out of him. Sonic crosses the finishing line, but his glee soon turns to despair when Cosmic turns into Metamorphia.

Metamorphia reveals she lured Sonic away from his friends whilst Badniks attack the Zone. Sonic tries to escape but is captured by Metamorphia's net form. He easily escapes this by drilling through the floor and is too quick to be caught by her gaseous form. As Sonic escapes, Metamorphia assumes Sonic's form and chases him. In the village, more Moto Bugs are attacking, but they divert their attention when they see two Sonics in the area. They wrongly target Metamorphia and the real Sonic takes the opportunity to smash them. With no sign of Metamorphia, Porker Lewis thinks she disintegrated in the Moto Bug's blast, but Sonic isn't so sure.

Trivia

  • Metamorphia is able to turn into Sonic and gets his speed powers at the same time. In her last appearance, she turned into Tails but couldn't fly.
  • "Badniks" is misspelled "Badnik's".
  • The idea of Badniks targetting the wrong Sonic is revisited in Sonic No More.

The previous Sonic the Hedgehog story was Metamorphia. The netx is The Unbeatable Foe.
