Morton is an explorer from Planet Meridian. Against his will, he was transformed into the fearsome beast Root.
History
Whilst exploring the Mandrake Swamp near New Tek City, Morton found the Root creature. Root quickly managed to attach itself to Morton's neck and took control of his mind. It then began to gradually grow all around him until there was nothing left of the former explorer. In this guise, Root was able to recruit Blockhead Bill, Society Max and the Chaotix Crew to help him pollute the waters of New Tek City. Only Sonic the Hedgehog was able to resist and was able to push a heavy pillar onto Root, crushing him. A dazed Morton emerged from the crusty body, with the tiny Root having fallen from his neck. Sonic was initially skeptical of Morton's claim until he saw Root escaping from the scene. The hedgehog grabbed a glass jar and trapped Root before allowing Morton to explain his story.
