The Insta-Shield (also called Forcefield), is a shield conjured by Sonic the Hedgehog. It seems to be created from static electricity, with it giving attackers a painful shock. Sonic forms the Insta-Shield by vibrating the air molecules in front of him at super speed.
The appearance of the shield surprised both Tails (who had never seen it) and Knuckles the Echidna (who unwittingly punched it). Sonic also used it protect himself at the last second from a Pointdexter that extended its spikes at the hedgehog. The force of the shield wilted the Badnik's spikes, but it also give Sonic a sharp shock.
Much later, Sonic used it to protect himself from Amy Rose's electrical crossbow bolts. The shield was now green and could affect a variable range around Sonic. However, prolonged attacks on it could pierce it, which Amy achieved with a volley of three shots.
The shield originally debuted in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, being a attack performed after pressing the jump button. This allows Sonic to hit enemies usually protected by spikes. It made a return in the Sonic Advance series and Sonic Generations.
