Haragei is a technique used by ninjas as a sort of radar to communicate with his surroundings. With this, the user can determine if there are any threats in the surrounding area or if something is wrong with the current situation. If everything is as it should be, a background "static" should be heard (or felt) rather than nothing at all. Joe Musashi is a frequent utiliser of haragei in the Shinobi series and has attempted to use it in all of his stories. It has proved useful once, allowing him to sneak up on two Neo Zeed henchmen in the Ibakari Province.
However, more often than not, someone has been able to smother Musashi's haragei and rendered it useless. In The Dark Circle, Musashi was attacked by an invisible Neo Zeed clan member and wondered if the organisation had learned to overcome haragei. The Fear Pavilion saw Water of The Four Elements fool Musashi into thinking she was Naoko, the love of his life, until she showed a behaviour not belonging to her. It failed him multiple times in The Art of War as Neo Zeed members and even plain armed guards were able to find him without giving him any warning. The same story also showed Musashi's sensei teaching him the subtle technique, as well as letting him know that it can easily be misdirected. In Way of the Warrior, The Void was able to throw a "blanket" over Musashi's haragei and give him absolutely nothing to work with. Finally, the highly-skilled Roofworlders managed to sneak up on Musashi, stuff him in a sack and knock him out, all while circumventing his haragei, in Power of the Elements.
Trivia
- This technique was known as "haregai" in The Dark Circle, but changed to its proper spelling in all Sonic the Comic stories.
