Grounder

Grounder 37

Grounder is a second-generation Badnik, created by Doctor Ivo Robotnik. The Grounder was designed as an upgraded version of the mole based Burrobot. As well as its nose drill, it also has a drill at the end of each arm. It tends to hide behind walls and smashes through them when it detects a target on the other side.

History

Grounders were used sparingly by Robotnik throughout Sonic the Comic's run. During his initial reign over Mobius, they were only utilised on one occasion, helping Robotnik break into Kintobor's Laboratory along with his Squeeze Tag Machine and several Crawlton and Tunnelbot models. They succeeded in breaking into the Freedom Fighters' base, but were thwarted when Knuckles the Echidna arrived to help. The battle was taken outside where Knuckles, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Johnny Lightfoot finished them off.

Robotnik decided to retire the Grounder model, reverting back to basic Burrobots on occasion. However, following a lengthy break from ruling, he announced his attention to reign once again under the New Robotnik Empire. The initial invasion saw him bring back many old Badnik designs, Grounder one of them. A red model launched an attack on the Metropolis Zone, aided by a Caterkiller Ubernik. It managed to avoid destruction initially, boasting that it had "successfully enslaved" an organic battery. Robotnik continued to use Grounders, with green versions attacking Knuckles and G.U.N. in the Rail Canyon Zone. Another one helped a horde of Badniks dig through a caved-in tunnel and attack Holly Thumpfoot of The Ultimax.

Although not entirely within the universe of Sonic the Comic, a giant Grounder was the subject of the story "Big Trouble" in The Official Sonic the Hedgehog Yearbooks.

Appearances

Grounders originate from the Aquatic Ruin Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. A main character from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is also a Grounder.
