"My most famous neighbor is the one people know the least about. They call him the Sitter. You'll find him near the Pilgrim's Road, almost in the shadow of Carbon Ridge."
―Rey writes about the Sitter in her survival guide[1]

The Sitter was a human male that lived on the desert planet Jakku and spent each day sat cross-legged atop a pillar in the Goazon Badlands. Some residents of Jakku thought him a prophet and shout questions up from the base of his pillar, but he never answered, and those who bothered him were chased away by Teedos who also brought the Sitter the supplies that kept him alive. The scavenger Rey wrote about the Sitter in her survival guide by 34 ABY.

Biography

Local celebrity

"When people bother the Sitter, a Teedo will show up and chase them away. Without the Teedos the Sitter would have died a long time ago. They bring him spinebarrel flesh, nightblossom rind, and water, but as far as I know he never talks to them, either."
―Rey writes about the Sitter in her survival guide[1]

A human[1] male[2] who became known as the Sitter was a permanent resident of the Goazon Badlands on the desert planet Jakku. Each day, he sat hunched and cross-legged beneath the sun atop a pillar close to the Pilgrim's Road, nearly in the shadow of the Carbon Ridge mountains. He remained completely still while[1] keeping watching[3] from the top of the pillar, moving only to climb up the pillar at sunrise and down again at sun set, and was the only thing visible in the desert for kilometers around his pillar.[1]

Although little was known about him, the Sitter became famous among the residents of Jakku, with some believing he was a prophet and gathering at the base of his pillar to ask him questions. However, he never answered them and, as far as his neighbour Rey knew, never spoke at all. Anyone who bothered the Sitter was chased away by members of the Teedo species, although he did not speak to them either. Despite this,[1] the Teedos venerated him[4] and brought the human spinebarrel[1] and thwip[2] flesh, nightblossom rind, and water[1] as offerings[5] which kept him alive.[1]

Rey's neighbour

"The Sitter keeps a lonely vigil on this tower in the shadow of Carbon Ridge. The Teedos sometimes bring him offerings."
―A note on Gammit Chond's map of Jakku, Galactic Atlas[5]
A sketch of a small robed mand sat atop a stone pillar in the desert of Jakku, with another small figure shown ascending a set of stairs up to the pillar.

Rey at one point saw three Teedos climbing the carved stairs that led to the Sitter's pillar as well as the Sitter himself while she was traveling down the Pilgrim's Road on her speeder.[2] She considered those who called him a prophet crazy[1] and believed that if he was a prophet he would do something other than sit around all day.[2] By 34 ABY,[6] she wrote about the Sitter in her survival guide and included a sketch of him.[1]

During that year,[7] after leaving Jakku, Rey began training as a Jedi on the planet Ahch-To under Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. She hoped that the training would not include anything akin to the Sitter's daily ritual, but was disappointed when Skywalker had her meditate on a mountain ledge in a similar fashion.[4] The Ithorian artist Gammit Chond at one point created a map of Jakku that included a sketch of the Sitter and described him as keeping a lonely vigil on his pillar. It was later published in the Galactic Atlas by the Graf Archive at some point after 34 ABY.[5]

Personality and traits

"If you pass by his pillar at sunrise or sunset you might see the Sitter climbing up or down, but otherwise he just sits cross-legged atop his pillar, completely still. As far as I know he's never spoken—certainly he's never said anything to the crazy people who think he's a prophet and stand beneath his pillar asking him questions."
―Rey writes about the Sitter in her survival guide[1]

When writing about him in her guide, Rey described the Sitter as looking tiny, skinny, and ancient, although she could not tell how old he was and believed his looks were due to his lifestyle in the sun.[1] She also believed that he was sun-addled.[4]

Equipment

"The Sitter's human; but I don't know how old he is—he looks skinny and tiny and ancient, dressed in rags bleached by the sun."
―Rey writes about the Sitter in her survival guide[1]

While atop his pillar, the Sitter wore gray and white[2] rags that had been bleached by the sun.[1]

Behind the scenes

A map from Complete Locations depicts the deserts of Jakku, with the Pilgrim's road at the top of the image and a point annoted as "the Sitter" marked near the bottom beside Carbon Ridge.

The Sitter was first mentioned in Rey's Survival Guide, a 2015 replica journal written by Jason Fry and illustrated by Andrew Barthelmes.[1] The character then appeared for the first time in the Star Wars Forces of Destiny chapter book Forces of Destiny: The Rey Chronicles, which was written by Emma Carlson Berne and released in 2018.[2]

The reference book Star Wars: Complete Locations,[8] released on September 27, 2016,[9] marks a point at the foot of Carbon Ridge with the annotation "The Sitter," however, the location is a great distance from the Pilgrim's Road.[8] As Rey's Survival Guide,[1] The Rey Chronicles,[2] and the reference book Star Wars: Galactic Atlas[5]—released on November 3, 2016[10]—all describe the Sitter's pillar as being close to the Pilgrim's Road,[1][2][5] it is unclear if the placement in Complete Locations is errorneous or represents the Sitter while he is not on the pillar.[8] The placement was repeated when the map was reprinted in the 2025 reference book Star Wars: Complete Locations, New Edition.[11]
