Netflix is an American provider of on-demand televised and cinematic content. Founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in Scotts Valley, California, Netflix initially both sold and rented DVDs by mail, but by 2007, Netflix introduced streaming media and video on demand. In January 2019, Netflix became the first tech company to join the Motion Picture Association of America, officially becoming a film studio.[2][3]
History
Relationship with Lucasfilm
On March 7, 2014—as part of a deal with The Walt Disney Company to become the exclusive American subscription service for Lucasfilm-produced content beginning in 2016[4]—Netflix made available the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars film, as well as all 121 episodes of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series, including the previously unreleased sixth season.[5] The latter were exclusive to Netflix until they were released on DVD and Blu-ray on November 11, 2014. The Clone Wars, both movie and show, left Netflix on April 7, 2019.
Starting in 2016 and ending in 2020, Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, and Solo: A Star Wars Story appeared on the service for a time, usually around two years. The agreement with Disney ended in 2019 due to the launch of Disney+, with its Disney-related productions moving exclusively to the service in 2022.[6][7]
