- "Loongren. Half-native life-forms of the Aakaash system. Innate force of evil. Encounters not known."
- ―A centuries-old folk culture entry for the Loongren
The Loongren were a species who were persecuted by the Land & Sky Corporation, ostracized by propaganda and kept in poverty. The species did not enjoy the civil rights of other sentients within the Aakaash system. Originally from an isolated homeworld, smugglers on the bankroll of corrupt corporations met the Loongren and tempted them with contacting the outside world by giving them goods and advanced tools, as well as promising them that if they worked for Xia Moist Pharmaceuticals, they could bring back more of those goods back home, except their "work" was serving as laboratory subjects for the pharmaceutical company's experiments on the Loongren's strength, which was stronger than the humans whom they resembled aside from the small dragon-like horns on their head. The Loongren were also the beings from which the life prolonging drug Dark yellow blood was extracted. A natural population of Loongren lived on the planet Mountain while a population bred and maintained by Xia Moist Pharmaceuticals was on Thunder. The natural population had developed sharp nails like claws.[1]
History
The species was thought to have been active in the Aakaash system well before human colonists arrived. In the early period of human colonization, the Loongren took on religious roles for the human colonists. The species acted like priests performing divination, religious rituals, and rain-making prayers. An old colonial legend recorded that the Loongren could call forth wind and rain based on this history. It was hypothesized by Padawan Sean that some part of the species' biology allowed them to detect changes in the weather. As the human civilization expanded and advanced the Loongren lost much of their territory and the old religion which venerated them was abandoned. They even began to be regarded as an inauspicious source of supernatural evil by the humans of the Aakaash system. Some prejudiced historical accounts also claimed that the Loongren used their high religious status to oppress others. At some time around 500 BBY, the species disappeared from credible historical records in the system.[1]
Behind the scenes
The Loongren appear in the Chinese web-novel The Vow of Silver Dawn as 龙人, which means "dragon people" or "dragon person." The Mandarin pronunciation of 龙人 is "lóng rén" in pinyin romanization. 龙 is traditionally written as 龍 and is the word for dragons, which are prominent in Chinese mythology as auspicious characters.
