- "The smaller ones can literally be picked up in caves, in streams, in the lava tubes of ancient volcanoes, or sometimes they're found embedded in veins of kyberite, a false kyber."
- ―Galen Walton Erso
Kyberite, also known as false kyber, was a base mineral from which kyber crystals grew. It was closely related to ranite, which was denser and tougher, despite the fact that the two never occured together.[2] The confessional in the Martyrium of Frozen Tears[3] on Tython[1] was said to be made of solid kyberite.[3]
While kyber crystals were attuned to The Force, kyberite was the polar opposite, allowing it to channel and guide the Force, though not negate it. Separatist scientist Istan Zaly theorized that kyber crystals grew in opposition to the kyberite. He created the Zaly Shield out of kyberite in hopes that it could amplify the Force powers of those who were weak in the Force.[4] Kyberite plating could shield against telepathy and detection; a ship plated in kyberite was capable of slipping past a sleeping summa-verminoth despite its immense psychic power, which it used to paralyze its victims[5]
