Gharal were a sentient species of long-lived, scaled beings. Their life spans meant that Gharal were considered adolescents even into their thirties. The species sported thick neck ridges and light gray skin. During the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and Confederacy of Independent Systems, a family of Gharal lived on the planet Langston, where they fell victim to an attack from the Separatists[1] in 22 BBY.[2] A Republic relief mission not long after saw Jedi Initiate Mill Alibeth deliver aid to the family, including its eldest surviving member, a thirty-year old girl named Rokura. These Gharal spoke in a broken form of Galactic Basic Standard.[1]
Behind the scenes
The Gharal were introduced in Mike Chen's 2022 novel Brotherhood.[1] While writing the book, Chen struggled to create enough proper names for new elements of Star Wars, and so turned to fellow author Peng Shepherd for assistance. Shepherd in turn devised a list of various naming ideas, from which the term "Gharal" originated.[3]

Notes and references

- ↑ Brotherhood is set between the beginning of the Clone Wars and the Battle of Christophsis, as the novel's plot involves Anakin Skywalker becoming a Jedi Knight, a rank he attained between those events. As Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates both events to 22 BBY, Brotherhood must be set in that year.

Mike Chen (@mikechenwriter) on Twitter (post): "#23: You have to make up a LOT of proper nouns for Star Wars. I'm pretty terrible at that. Bestselling author/Zelda superfan @pengshepherd sent me a list of ideas to apply various places, so the terms Gharal (species) and Norriker (ship) come from her list." (original link is obsolete)
